Halloween Pumpkin Carving Patterns

What would Halloween be without a carved pumpkin strategically placed in the windows or along the outside steps or patio? It would be a lot less than it is, and pumpkin carving has become a form of art that has reached in many cases very high levels, but also in its simplest form is a major part of celebrating and having Halloween fun.

The patterns of pumpkin carving are endless, and every year it seems thousands more from pumpkin carving enthusiasts around the world emerge and go to even greater quality and design levels.

A few basic pumpkin carving tips are in order before we get into the photos of cool pumpkin designs and artistry.

There are really only three basic things to keep in mind when carving a pumpkin. First, when you view that area that is dark when looking at a lighted pumpkin, that is the area on the pumpkin that is left untouched. Second, when you view the lighted pumpkin and see the white or light, that's where the carving has taken place. Third, and probably most importantly, the shaded and detailed areas are those areas of the pumpkin have been peeled, and so is the most creative part of the work, as the deeper or less you peel the pumpkin, the difference will the shading be.

So with those basics in mind, let's look at some very different carved pumpkins and get some ideas from them. 

The enormous popularity of Harry Potter has generated creativity in almost every type of medium, and pumpkins aren't excluded from that.

So it's not surprising to see these really nice Halloween pumpkin carvings inspired by the Harry Potter characters, and they're all really well done.

What a fun and compelling carved pumpkin of the headless horseman. It is really carved nicely, and the dark silhouette fits in great with the lighted background. Nice!

While this isn't a real difficult carved pumpkin pattern, it does represent what everything a Halloween carved pumpkin should be, and is one that all of us could do and use.

Spider webs and spiders are another must in our indoor and outdoor Halloween decorations, and this particular one is really a difficult and intricate design. It's really a nice spider web and spider carved pumpkin.

This carved pumpkin pattern, took a lot of work to get done, as you can see from the peeled and shaved areas, which are done brilliantly and painstakingly to show the tremendous detail of the spaces between the darker detail.

And the way that branch extends into the light at the top is really nice looking.

What can you say about this great carved and peeled pumpkin of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean? It's done really good, and the choice of light color really enhances the overall work. Great carved pumpkin design.

This is a good example of a peeled or shaved pumpkin, and shows the extraordinary detail that can be done with a pumpkin as your canvass.

This is a completely different type of pumpkin carving, and what a spectacular work, even if you're not familiar with, or a fan of, the Predator franchise.

Either way, this is a great carving, and really shows what someone that has some skill and patience can do with a pumpkin.

This is a very differently carved pumpkin from Halloweentown, and when you look at the way the shadows blend and light reflects, it is brilliant, even though the subject matter looks easy.

This is another one of those that may look simple to carve, but is full of difficult detail, shadowing and shaving, which creates the unique features of this mean old pumpkin.

There are so many pumpkin designs that I wanted to include about twenty more, but you get the idea and inspiration from all types of pumpkin design and themes, which should at least get you started on some brainstorming a great ideas of pumpkin designs of your own.
